In the fall of 2016, the life of 32-year-old Yusuf Ali Abdus-Salaam came to a violent end in Lancaster, South Carolina. On the evening of Tuesday, October 11, officers were called to the 300 block of Hampton Road shortly before 7:30 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Abdus-Salaam gravely wounded by multiple gunshots.
He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
At the time of his death, Abdus-Salaam was a man entangled with the legal system. He was out on bond awaiting trial for his alleged role in the 2009 beating and shooting death of Lemario Ford. In that case, Abdus-Salaam and four other men were accused of luring Ford to a vacant house and killing him in what was described as a retaliatory act for a previous robbery. His legal troubles also included a 2014 arrest for attempted murder and armed robbery, an incident in which he allegedly forced a man to strip naked and then shot at him as he fled. Despite the serious charges against him, his lawyer, Dave Cook, described his killing as a 'tragedy,' stating that Abdus-Salaam was a 'good person from a good family who was actively trying to turn his life around.'
The investigation into Abdus-Salaam's death was immediately active, with Lancaster Police offering a $5,000 reward for credible information that would lead to the identification and prosecution of those responsible. Law enforcement officials stated that they did not believe the shooting was a random act of violence. However, despite these efforts, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Yusuf Abdus-Salaam. The case remains unsolved, leaving his family, including his two sons, Jy'seer Amir and Jaliel Ahmad Stover, without answers.
