In the community of Lancaster, South Carolina, 57-year-old Edward 'Toot' Townsend, a man known for his kind nature and skillful work, was a familiar and well-liked figure. His life was abruptly cut short on a Monday night in August when violence shattered a quiet evening at the Palmetto Place Apartments on Pardue Street. Townsend was visiting his four-year-old daughter when a man entered the residence.
According to a witness, words were briefly exchanged before the visitor suddenly pulled out a gun and fired a single, fatal shot. Edward Townsend had been in the home for less than 30 minutes. He was rushed to MUSC-Lancaster Medical Center but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The Lancaster Police Department swiftly launched an investigation into the deadly shooting. They identified 56-year-old James Singleton, also of Lancaster, as the suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest on a murder charge. Authorities warned the public that Singleton should be considered armed and dangerous. It was believed he was traveling on foot, as there was no known address or vehicle associated with him, prompting an intensive manhunt for the suspected killer.
After a two-day search, the efforts of law enforcement came to a successful conclusion. On the Wednesday following the shooting, James Singleton was taken into custody in the nearby city of Rock Hill. His arrest was the result of a collaborative effort between the Lancaster Police Department, the Rock Hill Police Department, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the South Carolina Department of Pardon, Probation, and Parole. Following his capture, Singleton was held at the Lancaster Police Department.
