Jamal Brandan Smith, a 30-year-old Black man, was shot just before 2 a.m. near East Lake Street and 15th Avenue South in Minneapolis after officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert that was updated to a shooting. First responders found him gravely wounded and rushed him to Hennepin Healthcare, where he was pronounced dead. Another man, believed to have been injured in the same incident, arrived at the hospital separately with non-life-threatening wounds.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner identified Smith and ruled his death a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the right thigh. The report listed the place of injury at East Lake Street and 15th Avenue South and the location of death at 701 Park Avenue, Hennepin Healthcare's emergency department, with the Minneapolis Police Department noted as the investigating agency.
In the hours that followed, police said detectives were still piecing together the sequence of events. As of the initial reports that day and the following day, authorities had not announced any arrests in connection with Smith's killing and urged anyone with information to come forward.
