In the pre-dawn hours of a Friday in Minneapolis, the life of 14-year-old Fahim Laron Miller, a Black male from Saint Paul, was tragically cut short. On April 26, 2024, at approximately 3 a.m., Fahim was with other people inside an SUV at a gas station in the 2600 block of University Avenue NE. The quiet of the early morning was shattered when a second vehicle pulled into the parking lot and gunfire erupted from within.
Responding to reports of shots fired, Minneapolis police officers
arrived at the scene to find a grim sight. Fahim was discovered outside the SUV, suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. Officers immediately rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived and rushed the teenager to Hennepin County Medical Center. Despite the efforts to save him, Fahim succumbed to a gunshot wound to the chest and died three hours later. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner officially ruled his death a homicide.
Investigators began the arduous task of piecing together the events that led to the fatal shooting. Preliminary information suggested that Fahim and the other occupants of the SUV were the intended targets, though no one else was reported injured. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and police have not publicly identified any suspects in the immediate aftermath of the incident. While a woman in her 30s was arrested at the scene, it was for an unrelated warrant, and her connection to the shooting was still being investigated.
In the wake of the teenager's death, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara voiced his frustration and sorrow, calling the death of a teenager on the street "outrageous and totally unacceptable". He pledged that the department would aggressively investigate the homicide to bring a measure of justice to Fahim's loved ones. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek information from the public to help identify those responsible for the senseless act of violence that ended a young life.
