On a late Saturday morning in north Minneapolis, the life of Malacai Lamonte Bailey, a 25-year-old Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On June 1, 2024, Bailey was inside a vehicle near the intersection of North 33rd and Knox avenues when he was struck by multiple gunshots. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office would later confirm the cause of his death as homicide resulting from these wounds.
Responding officers found Bailey on the ground on North 34th Avenue,
between James and Knox avenues. Emergency services rushed him to North Memorial Health Hospital, but his injuries were too severe. Less than half an hour after the shooting, at 11:57 AM, Malacai Lamonte Bailey was pronounced dead. The preliminary investigation by the Minneapolis Police Department suggests that he was shot while inside a vehicle.
In the wake of the shooting, the community and his family are left grappling with the senseless loss of a young life. Described as a loving father to his two children, Bailey was also an emerging artist in the local music scene.
