On a Thursday afternoon, February 29, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a North Minneapolis neighborhood. Dwight William Alexander, a 22-year-old Black/African American male from New Brighton, was sitting in a parked car in the 3900 block of Sheridan Avenue North when he was fatally wounded. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later confirmed he died from multiple gunshot wounds in what was ruled a homicide.
Residents in the area reported hearing a succession of shots, a
brief pause, and then more gunfire. An SUV was seen speeding away from the scene immediately following the incident. Concerned neighbors rushed to the bullet-riddled vehicle and found Alexander slumped inside. They pulled him from the car and administered CPR until police and emergency medical personnel arrived around 4:30 p.m. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators found multiple bullet casings at the location and a firearm with an extended magazine in Alexander's lap.
In the wake of the shooting, Dwight's mother, Natashia Daniels, has made public pleas for anyone with information to come forward to aid the investigation. She has spoken about the profound loss of her only child and has called for an end to the senseless gun violence affecting young men.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the drive-by shooting. The Minneapolis Police Department's investigation into the homicide remains active and ongoing. Authorities are encouraging anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers anonymously.
