In the early hours of a Tuesday morning in north Minneapolis, the life of Wence Ledell Edwards, a 23-year-old Black / African American male, was tragically cut short. On February 6, 2024, in an alley behind a gas station on the 2600 block of West Broadway Avenue, a verbal dispute escalated to fatal violence. Minneapolis police responded to a call shortly after midnight and discovered Edwards suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate life-saving efforts of the officers, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office would later confirm that he died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Initial investigations into what was the city's fifth homicide of the year were met with silence. Investigators believed a verbal altercation led to the shooting, but for a time, no arrests were made, and no suspects were publicly identified. The community was left with the loss of a young man and the uncertainty of who was responsible. Months later, a break in the case brought a suspect into custody. Marvin Jewell Dancy, a 46-year-old man, was arrested in connection with the death of Wence Ledell Edwards. In a significant development, Dancy later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. His plea agreement is expected to result in a sentence of just over 12 and a half years. This admission brought a close to the investigation, providing some measure of justice for a life taken too soon.
