On a Friday morning in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on November 12, 2021, the life of 21-year-old Black / African American male, Kavanian Ladarius Dante Palmer, was tragically cut short in an act of selfless bravery. The events unfolded at the intersection of West Broadway Avenue and Lyndale Avenue N. when a driver, later identified as Robert D. Hall, 36, of Golden Valley, ran a red light and crashed into another vehicle.
As Hall attempted to flee the scene of the accident on foot, Palmer, along with the other driver and another man, gave chase in an attempt to stop him.
In the ensuing confrontation, Hall resisted the efforts of the men trying to detain him. It was during this struggle that Hall produced a handgun and fired, striking Palmer in the chest. The single gunshot wound proved to be fatal, and Palmer was later pronounced dead at North Memorial Health Hospital. His heroic intervention, an attempt to hold a reckless driver accountable, ultimately cost him his life, leaving a community to mourn the loss of a courageous young man.
Following the shooting, Hall's desperate attempt to escape continued. He ran to a nearby Cub Foods grocery store, where he tried to carjack a woman in the parking lot. However, his flight from justice was swiftly brought to an end by the intervention of bystanders and members of the community anti-violence group, We Push For Peace, who were working as security at the store. They managed to detain Hall, and during the struggle, a gun fell from his pocket. The group held him until police arrived and took him into custody. Witnesses at the scene also recovered a bullet-resistant vest and a backpack containing drugs that belonged to Hall.
Robert D. Hall was subsequently charged in connection with the death of Kavanian Palmer. In a plea deal, he pleaded guilty to second-degree unintentional murder and attempted robbery. As a result of his plea, Hall was sentenced to a term of 25 years in prison. With credit for the time he had already served in jail since his arrest, it is expected that he will serve approximately 16 and a half years of his sentence behind bars, with the remainder to be served on supervised release. The tragic death of Kavanian Palmer also had further reaching consequences, as he was a key witness in an unrelated murder case, which had to be dismissed by the Hennepin County Attorney's Office following his death.
