On October 9, 2016, seven-month-old Jayden Eric Redden and 20-year-old Gustav Duane Christianson II were fatally shot in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The tragic incident occurred when Jquan McInnis, then 17 years old, opened fire on a vehicle parked near 26th Street East and 11th Avenue South. McInnis fired six shots into the car, killing Christianson instantly.
As he was leaving, he fired one more shot through the car's back window, which struck and killed Jayden, who was seated in his car seat.
Following the shooting, McInnis was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. During his trial, it was revealed that McInnis had a troubled upbringing, including exposure to drugs and alcohol in the womb and chronic maltreatment while living with his grandmother. Despite these factors, Hennepin County District Court Judge Jeannice Reding described his actions as 'brazen and heartless.' McInnis was sentenced to 60 years in prison, with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
