On November 5, 2024, a tragic incident occurred in Minneapolis, Minnesota, resulting in the death of 13-year-old Qudir D. Blackwell. The incident took place in the early hours of the morning, around 1:30 AM, near the intersection of N. 24th and Sheridan avenues in the 2400 block of N. Ferrant Place.
According to police reports, the shooting was described as an 'apparent accidental' incident. A 14-year-old boy was handling a firearm when it discharged, fatally wounding Blackwell.
The victim was shot once, and despite immediate aid provided by responding officers, he tragically died at the scene.
At the time of the incident, the home was occupied by several other individuals, including two adult women and other juveniles. The 14-year-old responsible for the shooting remained at the scene and was subsequently arrested. He was then booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center.
In response to this heartbreaking event, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara emphasized the need for increased gun safety measures. He stated, 'The death of a child is always incredibly troubling and tragic,' and urged everyone to 'make every effort to ensure that every gun is securely stored'.
