The young child was at home with a babysitter while his mother, Charlotte Williams, was at work. He discovered a loaded firearm that had been left unsecured and accidentally shot himself in the head.

Family members described Jajuan as a lively and playful child who had a love for dinosaurs, superheroes, and fishing. His aunt, Meshia Woods, remembered him as being "so silly and goofy" and a "mama's boy." The devastating event has underscored the critical importance of safely securing firearms in homes, especially where children are present.
In the wake of the tragedy, the babysitter, identified as Elliot Staples III, was arrested and is facing a manslaughter charge. According to the criminal complaint, Staples had set his gun down on a center island in the kitchen of the apartment. He told authorities that he then went to the bathroom and heard a gunshot. He stated that he usually placed the gun on top of the refrigerator but had not done so on this occasion because he was in a rush. Jajuan's mother expressed her profound grief and disbelief, stating that she had trusted the babysitter and does not allow guns in her household.
