In the early evening of March 14, 2023, the life of a young Black/African American man, Khristopher Brown, was cut tragically short in Topeka, Kansas. The 19-year-old, known affectionately to friends and family as "KB," was a recent graduate of Lawrence High School and had completed a carpentry trade program at Washburn Tech. He was described as a playful, courageous, and kind individual with a gorgeous smile that could light up any room he entered.
On that Tuesday, just before 8 p.m.,
Topeka police were dispatched to the 1300 block of SE 8th Street following a report of a hit-and-run accident. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Khristopher Brown at the scene. He was suffering from a gunshot wound. First responders pronounced him deceased at the location, turning a reported traffic incident into a homicide investigation. Detectives were called to the scene, and the area between SE Locust and SE Lime on 8th and 10th streets was shut down for several hours as they began their work.
In the days following the discovery of Khristopher's death, authorities publicly identified him as the victim of the shooting. The investigation into his homicide was ongoing, but law enforcement did not immediately release information regarding any potential suspects or arrests in connection with the case.
