In the early morning hours of December 13, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a north Wichita neighborhood, forever altering the lives of two teenage boys. Hispanic/Latino male Gabriel Aiden Jimenez, a 15-year-old, was walking with a 14-year-old friend near the intersection of 15th Street North and Poplar when an unknown individual opened fire from a nearby backyard.
Both youths were struck by the sudden and indiscriminate violence.
First responders arrived at the scene just after 12:15 a.m. to find Gabriel with a severe gunshot wound to his abdomen. His younger companion had been shot in the upper right leg. Both were rushed to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment. While the 14-year-old's injuries were not life-threatening, Gabriel's condition was critical. He fought for his life for five days before ultimately succumbing to his injuries on Monday, December 18, 2023.
The Wichita Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting, initially seeking a "person of interest" in the case. However, the search for the person or persons responsible for Gabriel's death has not yet led to an arrest. The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear. The case is now listed as an unsolved homicide by the Wichita Police Department's Cold Case Unit, a stark reminder of the unanswered questions and the life cut tragically short.
