On a Tuesday afternoon in Wichita, Kansas, on June 9, 2020, a domestic dispute escalated to a fatal conclusion. Rahim Omar, a 32-year-old Black/African American male, had gone to the home of his 24-year-old girlfriend located in the 2800 block of South Ida. An argument broke out between the couple, a continuation of a troubled history that had prompted police involvement in the preceding month.
The situation grew more intense, and during the confrontation, Omar broke a window at the residence.
Police reported that Omar then charged toward his girlfriend while threatening her. In response, the woman armed herself with a handgun and fired a single shot, striking him. Following the shooting, a friend of Omar's arrived at the home and transported him to a nearby QuikTrip at the intersection of Hydraulic and Wassall. It was from this location that a call was made to the police at approximately 3:40 p.m.
When officers arrived at the convenience store, they found Omar with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital for medical treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries later that evening. Investigators spoke with the girlfriend at the South Ida residence. While the investigation began immediately, no arrest was made at the time of the incident. Authorities confirmed there had been previous domestic violence calls involving the couple. The case was set to be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office for a decision on whether charges would be filed against the girlfriend. A later report from the District Attorney's office confirmed the coroner had ruled the death a homicide that occurred during a domestic violence dispute. There have been no public reports of any other suspects or arrests in connection with the death of Rahim Omar.
