In the early evening of February 20, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the ordinary sounds of a gas station near 18th Street and Parallel Parkway in Kansas City, Kansas. When the ensuing chaos subsided, 19-year-old Hispanic male Sergio Enrique Ramirez was found fatally wounded. Another individual was also discovered at the scene, suffering from life-threatening injuries.
Emergency services pronounced Ramirez dead at the location.
Known for his big heart and a sense of humor that brought joy to his friends and family, Sergio was a beloved son, brother, and partner. His sudden and violent death left a void in the lives of those who knew him. He was remembered as someone who was respectful and protective of his loved ones, with a contagious laugh that will live on in their memories.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified a vehicle of interest. Three days later, on February 23, officers with the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department attempted to stop the suspect vehicle near North 32nd Street and State Avenue. The driver refused to stop, initiating a pursuit that crossed state lines into Kansas City, Missouri, before returning to Kansas. The chase came to an end when the fleeing driver lost control while exiting onto North 7th Trafficway, colliding with both a police car and a civilian vehicle. The suspect was then taken into custody without further incident.
