On a tragic Tuesday afternoon, August 18, 2015, the life of 23-year-old Deron J. Rucker, a Black male from Kansas City, Kansas, was cut short by gunfire. The incident unfolded just after 2 p.m. in the parking lot outside Pepper's Hot Dogs & Phillies, a restaurant located in the 1900 block of Quindaro Boulevard. Deron, along with his 24-year-old cousin, Antonio R. Rucker, were victims of what police described as a drive-by shooting.
Both men were found deceased at the scene, leaving a community in shock and authorities searching for answers in the busy commercial area.
The investigation into the double homicide led to the arrest of a suspect. Christopher E. Lewis, who was 23 at the time and also from Kansas City, Kansas, was charged by the Wyandotte County prosecutor with two counts of first-degree premeditated murder. The community hoped for justice as the case against Lewis proceeded. However, the legal process did not result in a conviction. In 2016, the case against Lewis went to trial but ended in a hung jury, meaning the jurors could not reach a unanimous verdict.
Following the mistrial, the case remained in a state of uncertainty until September 2017, when the Wyandotte County District Attorney's Office made the decision to drop the murder charges against Christopher Lewis. A spokesman for the prosecutor's office stated that the charges could be refiled in the future if an ongoing investigation were to produce additional evidence that would support a conviction. As it stands, no one is currently incarcerated for the murders of Deron J. Rucker and Antonio R. Rucker, and the case remains a painful, unresolved chapter for their families and the Kansas City community.
