On the afternoon of July 26, 2025, a tragic sequence of events unfolded in Kansas City, Kansas, culminating in the death of 34-year-old Elijah Ming, a Black / African American male. A nine-year veteran of the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Department, Deputy Ming was responding to a domestic situation on South 30th Street. A woman had requested a civil standby to safely move her belongings out of a home after being threatened by a man with a gun.
At approximately 3:45 p.m., as Deputy Ming
and a Kansas City Police officer arrived at the residence, a man inside, later identified as 38-year-old Shawn Harris, opened fire. Deputy Ming was struck by the gunfire. As additional officers arrived, more shots were exchanged with the suspect. Ming was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically succumbed to his wounds later that evening.
Following the initial shooting, Harris barricaded himself inside the home for nearly 90 minutes. After negotiations with law enforcement, he exited the house and was taken into custody. It was reported that Harris had also sustained non-life-threatening injuries from the exchange of gunfire and was treated at a hospital before being jailed.
In the days following the shooting, Shawn Harris was charged with capital murder in the death of Deputy Elijah Ming and criminal possession of a weapon. Wyandotte County's district attorney announced that they would consider pursuing the death penalty. Harris, who has a criminal record in both Kansas and Missouri, was held on a $2 million bond. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was tasked with investigating the officer-involved shooting. The community mourned the loss of Deputy Ming, who was remembered as a dedicated officer, a husband, and a father.
