In the midst of a joyous Mardi Gras celebration in Shreveport, Louisiana, a sudden act of violence brought a tragic end to the life of 17-year-old Kip Christensen Lewis. On the evening of February 18, 2023, while attending the Krewe of Gemini parade near Clyde Fant Memorial Parkway, the white male teenager was fatally wounded by a single gunshot. Emergency responders rushed to the scene around 5:45 p.m., finding Lewis with critical injuries.
He was swiftly transported to Ochsner LSU Health hospital, but despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 6:17 p.m.
Kip, a junior at Elysian Fields High School in nearby Texas, was known as an adored son and a doted-upon brother. His sudden death sent shockwaves through his tight-knit community, where his father served as a school board member and his mother was a long-time elementary school teacher. The school district, deeply affected by the loss, made counseling services available to students and staff and closed all campuses on the day of his funeral to allow the community to mourn and pay their respects.
The investigation into the shooting led to a swift development. A few days after the incident, a 16-year-old male turned himself in to the Caddo Juvenile Justice complex. According to witnesses who spoke with the Shreveport Police, a group of individuals, including the suspect and Lewis, were engaged in playful behavior, chasing each other with plastic swords near a vehicle. During this horseplay, the 16-year-old reportedly produced a handgun. A single shot was fired, striking Lewis.
Following the investigation and witness accounts that suggested the shooting was unintentional, the 16-year-old suspect was charged with one count of negligent homicide.
