In the early hours of March 25, 2023, the vibrant nightlife of downtown Shreveport was shattered by a burst of gunfire that erupted in the 200 block of Texas Street. When the chaos subsided, 32-year-old Jacorvin Taylor, a male resident of Shreveport, lay dead, and six other individuals were wounded in what authorities would describe as a mass shooting.
The incident unfolded in the city's Red River Entertainment District, a popular area known for its bars and clubs, turning a scene of weekend revelry into one of tragedy and violence.
The investigation into the shooting led Shreveport police to identify two suspects, Devin Owen Porter Jr. and Zyun Thomas. Porter was apprehended shortly after the incident. The search for Thomas, however, extended for a significant period before he was taken into custody in December 2023. Both men faced serious charges for their roles in the deadly shooting.
The legal process brought a measure of closure to the case. In November 2024, a judge sentenced Devin Owen Porter Jr., who was 21 at the time, to life in prison. He was found guilty of the second-degree murder of Jacorvin Taylor and six counts of attempted murder for the other victims who were injured in the hail of bullets. His co-defendant, Zyun Thomas, who was 20, later pleaded guilty. In January 2026, Thomas was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his involvement in the fatal shooting. The convictions marked the culmination of the efforts by law enforcement to bring the individuals responsible for Jacorvin Taylor's death to justice.
