An argument at a family gathering in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, ended in the tragic death of 18-year-old Kevinesha McDowell on April 23, 2023. The young woman, a recent mother to a two-month-old, was shot and killed, while her 27-year-old sister, Anntaesha McDowell, was also shot multiple times and left in critical condition. The shooting occurred around 10:00 p.m.
in the 3600 block of Geronimo Street, where family members had gathered for a 'celebration of life' to raise money for the funeral of another brother who had been recently killed.
During the gathering, a verbal altercation erupted, escalating to a devastating act of violence. Kevinesha was reportedly attempting to break up the fight when she was fatally shot in the head and died at the scene. Her older sister was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries but was later reported to be in stable condition. Anntaesha had been caring for her seven siblings since their mother's death in 2016.
The suspect in the shooting was identified as the victims' 29-year-old brother, Gerald McDowell. He fled the scene after the incident but was arrested by Baton Rouge Police Department Homicide Detectives on April 27, 2023. McDowell was subsequently booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
Following his arrest, Gerald McDowell was charged with first-degree murder for the death of Kevinesha and attempted first-degree murder for the shooting of his other sister. He also faces a charge of illegal use of a weapon.
