In what was supposed to be a day of carefree celebration, 17-year-old Martha Odom's life was tragically cut short on April 23, 2026. A senior at Ascension Episcopal School, she and her friends were at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge for an unofficial "senior skip day," just weeks shy of their graduation. The festive atmosphere in the mall's food court was shattered when gunfire erupted between two rival groups, and Martha was caught in the crossfire.
She was struck by a bullet in the chest and, despite the immediate response, succumbed to her injuries. Five other people were also wounded in the shooting.
Martha was remembered by her school as a "joyful presence whose kindness and infectious enthusiasm brought light to all who knew her." A talented and driven young woman, she was the captain of the girls' soccer team and the editor of the school newspaper. She had a passion for writing, having recently won first place in a local library's writing contest, and planned to study English and creative writing at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Outside of school, she was a dedicated dancer who taught at a local studio. Her family, devastated by the loss of their firstborn daughter, described her as being "full of light, love and joy."
The investigation into the senseless violence moved quickly. Authorities determined that the shooting was not a random act but the result of a dispute between two groups that had arranged to meet at the mall. The day after the shooting, one of the suspects, 17-year-old Markel Lee, surrendered to the Baton Rouge Police Department. He was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, and illegal use of a weapon. Investigators were able to identify Lee through surveillance footage and by tracking a vehicle that left the scene, which was driven by his grandmother who was unaware of his involvement at the time.
Police have also stated that they are actively searching for a second suspect in connection with the shooting and have asked for the public's assistance in identifying this individual. As the legal proceedings against Markel Lee begin, a community mourns the loss of a bright and promising young woman whose future was stolen by a senseless act of violence. In her memory, Martha's family has established "The Martha Odom Legacy of Joyful Grace in Motion fund" to support causes that reflect her compassionate spirit.
