In the autumn of 2023, the city of Monroe, Louisiana, was rocked by a violent shooting that claimed the life of a young teenager. Dontavius Wilson, a 14-year-old African American male, was fatally wounded on the evening of Saturday, October 21, 2023. The incident occurred at a block party on Renwick Street, an event that followed the Carroll High School Homecoming game.
The joyous atmosphere of the celebration was shattered when automatic weapons were fired into the crowd, resulting in the tragic death of Wilson and injuring at least five other people. Dontavius, known affectionately as 'Bubba' and 'DonDon,' was a student at Carroll Junior High School and a football player for the Bullpups, wearing jersey number 22.
In the days following the shooting, the Monroe Police Department launched an investigation that quickly led to the identification and apprehension of two suspects. The first arrest was made on Monday, October 23, 2023, when a 17-year-old male was taken into custody. He was charged with second-degree murder, two counts of carrying a weapon on school property, aggravated assault with a firearm, and possession of a handgun by a juvenile.
Two days later, on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, a second suspect, 19-year-old Joshua L. Smiley, was arrested in connection with the deadly shooting. Both he and the juvenile suspect were initially charged with second-degree murder and other related offenses. In a later development, the charges against both individuals were reportedly upgraded in February 2024, although specific details about the enhanced charges were not publicly disclosed. The community mourned the loss of Dontavius Wilson, with his funeral services held on November 4, 2023, at the Morehouse Parish Association Building, followed by his burial at H.V.
