On the evening of May 18, 2024, a graduation party in Marrero, Louisiana, turned into a scene of violence that claimed the life of 17-year-old Dontrell Pierre. Gunfire erupted near Rue Louis Philippe and Westwood Drive as the celebration was winding down. When Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputies arrived around 8 p.m., they discovered Pierre suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Another adult male was also wounded in the shooting and was last reported to be in critical condition. The investigation suggests that Pierre and the other victim attempted to flee the scene in a vehicle, which subsequently crashed into a bus stop approximately two miles away on Lapalco Boulevard. One witness described a chaotic scene in which one of the injured individuals entered her car, pleading for help after being shot.
Investigators believe the shooting was not a random act of violence. It is thought that a group of teenagers, including Pierre, had gone to the graduation party with the intention of retaliating for prior altercations. In the course of the investigation, three suspects were identified and taken into custody. Legend Baker, Skylor Johnson, and Jyron Cosse have all been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Dontrell Pierre.
Testimonies indicate that Baker allegedly organized the planned attack and was himself injured during the exchange of gunfire. After the vehicle he was in crashed, he reportedly flagged down another car and was taken to receive medical attention for his injuries. The authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident that cut short the life of the young man from Marrero.
