In the quiet community of Marrero, Louisiana, the life of 32-year-old Jonathan Brookin, a father of five, was abruptly ended on the evening of Monday, January 27, 2025. Remembered by his loved ones for a funny, energetic, and outrageous personality, Brookin was a truck driver and a graduate of Helen Cox High School, where he had been a football player and a tuba player in the band.
His life, however, took a tragic turn, rooted in a contentious relationship with his ex-girlfriend.
On that fateful evening, deputies responded to reports of gunfire at Brookin's home on Sayres Drive around 6 p.m. Inside, they discovered Brookin had been shot and killed. The horror of the event was compounded by the presence of two of his young children, aged five and six, who were found physically unharmed but hiding under a bed.
The investigation quickly centered on his 32-year-old ex-girlfriend, Subrina Honore of New Orleans. According to Brookin's family, the couple had recently ended their relationship of less than a year. The breakup was reportedly fueled by Brookin's doubts about the paternity of a child Honore had recently given birth to and claimed was his. In the days leading up to the shooting, Honore had allegedly been making threats against him on social media.
Within a day of the fatal shooting, Subrina Honore was arrested and booked on charges of second-degree murder and obstruction of justice. She was not alone. A second suspect, 31-year-old Arthur Thomas of Marrero, was also taken into custody and faced the same charges. Both were held without bail at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center. A subsequent superseding indictment brought charges against two more individuals, 32-year-old Jatary Joseph and 34-year-old Jjaun Jasmin, for their alleged roles in Brookin's death. They were also charged with second-degree murder and obstruction of justice. The case against the four individuals points to a tragic culmination of a personal dispute that escalated to a violent and fatal confrontation.
