In the afternoon hours of Tuesday, June 4, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the calm on Kansas Street in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, leading to the tragic death of 21-year-old James Roland Jayvante Caples. A Black male, Caples was a resident of both Louisiana and Texas. The incident unfolded at approximately 4:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of Kansas Street.
Emergency services and Baton Rouge Police Department officers were dispatched to the scene following reports of the shooting.
Upon their arrival, they found that Caples had sustained life-threatening injuries. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, James Caples succumbed to his injuries later that day. Initially, the motive for the shooting and any potential suspects were unknown to investigators.
The investigation into the death of James Caples continued for several months. In September 2024, Baton Rouge Police Homicide Detectives identified a suspect in the fatal shooting. As a result of their investigation, 18-year-old Gabriel Bazile was arrested. Bazile was subsequently charged with negligent homicide and was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
