In the early moments of a Wednesday, just after midnight on November 2, 2016, the life of 18-year-old Keondrae Ricks was tragically cut short in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Ricks, a male, was discovered lying in the 2000 block of Nebraska Street, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his chest.
According to accounts from a witness present at the scene, the fatal encounter began when two men, identified as Treshone Coates and Monte Carey, confronted Ricks in the street.
The situation escalated quickly as Coates allegedly drew a handgun and fired at Ricks. Following the shooting, Carey was reportedly seen going through Ricks' pockets before both men fled the area on foot. The witness later informed authorities that the two men had planned the murder before the confrontation took place. Neighbors in the vicinity reported seeing a silver-colored Hyundai with three individuals inside circulating the area late that night and into the morning.
The investigation into Keondrae Ricks' death led to the arrests of both suspects. Treshone Coates was apprehended in March of the following year and charged with second-degree murder. In April 2017, the second suspect, 27-year-old Monte Carey, was also arrested and faced a charge of second-degree murder for his alleged involvement in the planned killing. A witness positively identified Carey from a photographic lineup as the individual who was with Coates during the incident. Carey was subsequently booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison with his bond set at $300,000.
