On a tragic night in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the life of a promising young man, 24-year-old Silas Roderick Regus Gibbs, was cut short by an act of gun violence. On March 3, 2012, Gibbs, a former running back for Southern University with an infectious smile, was fatally shot while riding in a car along Interstate 110. The incident unfolded in the early morning hours, between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m., leaving a community in mourning and a family shattered by the sudden loss of a loving father to two
young daughters.
The initial discovery was made by a Baton Rouge Police Officer who stopped to investigate a stalled red Ford Mustang in the southbound lane of I-110, between the Mohican and Chippewa exits. Inside the vehicle, the officer found Silas Gibbs slumped over in the front passenger seat, having sustained a gunshot wound to the face. The passenger side window was shattered and on the ground next to the car. The ensuing investigation quickly identified a suspect who had been in the vehicle with Gibbs just before the fatal shot was fired.
The investigation led authorities to 22-year-old Walter Jerome Fort of Zachary. In the days following the shooting, Fort fled to Houston, Texas. He was located and apprehended by a university police officer on the campus of Texas Southern University on March 5, 2012. Fort was then extradited back to Baton Rouge to face charges for his alleged role in Gibbs' death.
Walter Jerome Fort was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon. The case against him proceeded to trial, where he was ultimately found guilty as charged for the murder of Silas Roderick Regus Gibbs. Following his conviction, Fort was sentenced to life in prison at hard labor without the benefit of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence, ensuring he would be held accountable for the senseless killing. The court proceedings revealed that two other individuals were also in the car at the time of the incident and called 911 to report the shooting, providing crucial information that led to the swift identification and arrest of Fort.
