In the early evening of February 8, 2020, a 17-year-old male named Gyron Lebeuf was found with multiple gunshot wounds in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The incident occurred in the 10100 block of The Grove Avenue, an area near the Mall of Louisiana with businesses and upscale apartments. Emergency services transported Lebeuf to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy later revealed that Lebeuf had been shot five times by two different guns.
Family members believe he was the intended target of the attack. He was reportedly out buying a birthday gift for his mother at the time of the shooting.
The Baton Rouge Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into Lebeuf's death. Witnesses reported seeing a group of three teenagers asking for rides to leave the area shortly after the gunshots were heard. A police helicopter was dispatched and, using video surveillance from nearby stores, was able to track the movements of the three individuals. Video footage captured one of the teens discarding an object as they fled into a wooded area. Investigators later discovered two pistols in the location where the object was thrown. Police also found a gun near where Lebeuf was shot, but it had not been fired.
Five days after the shooting, on February 13, 2020, authorities arrested three juvenile males in connection with the murder. The suspects were identified as 15-year-old Inmond Street, 16-year-old Frederick Tate, and 14-year-old Bradley Payne. All three were booked into a juvenile detention facility on charges of second-degree murder. The trio appeared in juvenile court the following day for a preliminary hearing. During the hearing, a detective testified about the events leading to their capture. Due to issues with securing legal representation, the hearings for Street and Tate were postponed. A bond for Payne was set at $30,000. The police were awaiting DNA and fingerprint analysis to determine which of the suspects had fired the weapons.
