On July 25, 2024, a decorated 11-year veteran of the Lafayette Police Department, Senior Corporal Segus Jolivette, a 35-year-old male, was killed in the line of duty during a tense standoff in Jeanerette, Louisiana. The incident unfolded as law enforcement, including a SWAT team, were attempting to serve a warrant. The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Nyjal Hurst of Jeanerette, barricaded himself inside a mobile home, taking two individuals hostage.
