James “Jim” Kennedy Smith, a 75-year-old white man from the small mill town of Whitmire, South Carolina, was known to neighbors more for his quiet routines than for anything that might hint at the violence that would end his life. Born in St. Matthews in 1940, he served in the U.S. Air Force before spending his working years as a foreman with Eagle Construction Company, paving roads across South Carolina.
