In the early morning hours of June 1, 2023, the life of Jeffrey Maurice Bizzle, a 38-year-old Black male, was tragically cut short on the streets of downtown Louisville, Kentucky. Responding to a notification from a gunshot detection system around 4:30 a.m., Metro Police officers arrived at the area of South First and Jacob Streets to find Bizzle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate life-saving efforts by the officers and emergency medical personnel who arrived at the scene, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The initial investigation into the shooting left police searching for suspects, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest in the case. For months, the circumstances surrounding Bizzle's death remained a painful mystery for his family and the community. He was remembered by loved ones at a funeral service held on June 12 at Mount Olive Baptist Church, a gathering of sorrow and remembrance for a life taken too soon.
Nearly ten months later, a significant breakthrough brought the case back into the light. On March 21, 2024, Louisville Metro Police announced the arrests of two individuals in connection with the homicide. Willetta A. Lewis, 30, and Timothy Deon Rayshawn Wright, 29, were taken into custody and charged with murder and first-degree robbery. According to court records, the investigation revealed a robbery that escalated to a fatal shooting. It is alleged that Lewis first stole items from Bizzle, after which Wright shot him. Investigators were able to identify both suspects through surveillance footage and witness identification. A crucial piece of evidence came from an unrelated arrest of the pair the previous September, where a gun was recovered that ballistics testing later matched to the weapon used in Bizzle's murder. Both suspects were lodged in the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections to await legal proceedings.
