In the Shelby Park neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, Nicholas L. Clay, a 42-year-old Black/African American man, was shot and killed on the morning of March 1, 2022. The incident, which police believe was an attempted robbery, unfolded on the doorstep of his home as he was returning from his job as a contract worker for UPS. His wife witnessed the tragic event through their home security camera as he was ambushed and shot while walking inside.
Known affectionately as 'Nick,' Clay was
a beloved member of his community, recognized for his kind-hearted nature and dedication to helping children in his neighborhood. A former college basketball player at Carson Newman University and Brown Mackey College, he was a married father to a son. His wife expressed that he would have willingly given his assailants anything they had asked for.
Following the shooting, Louisville Metro Police Department officers responded to a call on Clay Street near Camp Street just before 10 a.m. They found Nicholas with a gunshot wound, and he was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 10:30 a.m. A neighbor reported hearing an argument, a single pop, a yell, and then several more shots.
The Louisville Metro Police Department's Homicide Unit is handling the investigation. In the days following the shooting, authorities released images of two men they identified as persons of interest and asked for the public's help in identifying them. Despite these efforts and reports that suspects were seen fleeing the scene, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Nicholas L. Clay, and the case remains unsolved.
