On the late evening of July 24, 2024, a 22-year-old Black male named Romualdy Pierre-Charles was tragically killed at his home in Brockton, Massachusetts. Just before midnight, Brockton Police responded to 911 calls reporting a shooting at a residence on Vesey Street. Upon arrival, officers found Pierre-Charles in the backyard of the home, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
Neighbors later recounted hearing a series of gunshots that shattered the night's quiet, with one resident distinguishing between a few faint shots followed by several louder ones.
The investigation that followed, led by the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office and Massachusetts State Police, quickly determined that the shooting was not a random act. A review of surveillance footage from the area revealed a harrowing sequence of events. Three individuals, all dressed in black, were seen approaching the Vesey Street home. The footage showed them chasing Pierre-Charles into his backyard, where the fatal shooting occurred. During the incident, one of the assailants was also shot in the leg.
Within days, authorities made arrests in connection with the murder. The investigation identified two suspects: Govanni Carapinha, 23, and Marcus Miranda, 20. Carapinha was taken into custody after he was treated for a gunshot wound at Boston Medical Center. Surveillance video showed Miranda and an unidentified third suspect wheeling Carapinha into the hospital. On July 29, Massachusetts State Police troopers arrested Miranda at Boston's Logan International Airport as he was attempting to board a flight to leave the country. A third male suspect, also seen on surveillance video, remains unidentified. Both Carapinha and Miranda were subsequently indicted on charges of murder and various firearm offenses and are being held without bail.
