On the night of Friday, January 20, 2023, violence erupted in the 1300 block of West 32nd Street in Indianapolis, Indiana, drawing a heavy police response to the near northwest side of the city. Just after 10:00 p.m., officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the scene following reports of gunfire near North Harding Street and Interstate 65. Upon their arrival, first responders discovered a 50-year-old male victim suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
The injured man was found lying on the ground in critical condition and was immediately transported by medics to Eskenazi Health Hospital, where medical staff worked to stabilize him.
Despite the efforts of healthcare professionals, the victim succumbed to his injuries several days later. He passed away at the hospital on Tuesday, January 24, 2023. The Marion County Coroner’s Office subsequently identified him as Donald Lee Meade Jr. Known affectionately to friends and family as 'Sunny D,' he was remembered as a grandfather and a lover of guitar music who had attended Arsenal Tech High School. His death marked a tragic escalation of the initial assault into a homicide investigation, prompting detectives to seek answers regarding the circumstances that led to the shooting.
As the investigation transitioned into a homicide case, law enforcement authorities reported that no suspects had been apprehended in connection with the crime. In the days following the announcement of Meade's death, police continued to canvas the area and review evidence, but no arrests were immediately made.
