In the summer of 2023, 19-year-old Elijah Martin, a male from Indianapolis, made plans for a firearm transaction that would tragically end his life. On July 12, he arranged to meet Jeremiah Shanks, a young man who had previously dated his sister, to either sell or trade a gun. The meeting was set to take place at the Brownstone Apartments on North Meridian Street.
Unbeknownst to Martin, the encounter was not destined to be a simple exchange.
Around noon that day, events turned fatal inside an apartment building at North Meridian and East 34th streets. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were flagged down by a person who reported a man had been shot in the chest. They found Elijah Martin in the courtyard, suffering from a gunshot wound. Before being transported to the hospital where he would later die from his injuries, Martin was able to tell the officers that the person who shot him was his sister's ex-boyfriend. The investigation that followed painted a grim picture of a robbery gone wrong. Security footage from the apartment complex showed 18-year-old Jeremiah Shanks and his accomplice, 18-year-old Adrian Bond Jr., walking into the building with Martin. Just a minute later, Martin was seen stumbling out of the building before collapsing. The same cameras captured Shanks and Bond exiting through a back door, now in possession of a gun they didn't have when they entered.
The investigation quickly led to the arrests of both Shanks and Bond. Evidence gathered by detectives included social media activity showing the suspects with the stolen firearms after the shooting, as well as conversations Bond had about receiving guns from the robbery. It was also revealed that at the time of the murder, Shanks was on probation for a previous armed carjacking and had removed his GPS monitoring device a month prior, leaving his whereabouts untracked by authorities.
In May 2025, justice was delivered for Elijah Martin's family. Following a three-day jury trial, Jeremiah Shanks was found guilty of two counts of murder, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, armed robbery, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. Adrian Bond was convicted of robbery resulting in serious bodily injury and armed robbery for his role in the crime. Subsequently, Shanks was sentenced to 62 years in prison, while Bond received a 23-year sentence.
