On the early morning of October 6, 2008, authorities in Indianapolis, Indiana, were called to a scene of devastation at the northeast corner of 38th Street and High School Road. Following reports of gunfire around 2:00 a.m., investigators discovered a vehicle that had crashed through a concrete barrier and plunged down a steep embankment into a creek bed behind a strip mall. Inside the wreckage of the 2006 Gray Dodge Charger, police found the lifeless body of 23-year-old Brandon C.
Reeves, a male resident of the city. He was found slumped behind the wheel, having suffered fatal gunshot wounds before the crash occurred.
Prior to the incident, Reeves had been spending time with friends near a local skating rink, USA Skates West, which had closed for the night at 2:00 a.m. Witnesses reported that he had briefly pulled his vehicle up to speak with a group of friends in the parking lot. After a short exchange, he drove away, and moments later, shots rang out. While friends initially feared he had been caught in the crossfire of an unrelated disturbance, official cold case files later detailed a more direct confrontation. According to state investigators, Reeves had stopped at the Peddler's Mall to talk with acquaintances when he was approached by two unidentified individuals who confronted him and opened fire.
In a desperate attempt to escape the gunfire, Reeves drove his vehicle through a narrow passage at the edge of the parking lot. The car clipped a wall and a column before smashing through the barrier and falling approximately ten feet into the water below. Emergency crews utilized a crane to hoist the vehicle from the ravine, but Reeves had already succumbed to his injuries. At the time of the investigation, police noted that while Reeves had a minor history of traffic violations, he had no known criminal history or enemies that would explain such a violent attack.
Despite the presence of a large crowd in the area and a nearby officer who heard the shots, the case proved difficult to solve. Officers stopped two vehicles in the vicinity shortly after the shooting, but no arrests were made in connection with the homicide. The investigation remained open, with authorities looking for two Black males described as the suspects who initiated the confrontation. Reeves was survived by a young son, his fiancé, and his parents, leaving a family grieving for answers in a case that lingered on the state's list of unsolved homicides.
