In the early morning hours of July 30, 2023, tragedy struck in Gary, Indiana, when 24-year-old Ja’Markis Hackett was killed in a fatal shooting. Responding to reports of multiple gunshots around 6:22 a.m. in the 1400-1500 block of Jackson Street, police discovered a grim scene.
Hackett, a Black male, was found deceased, one of two victims in the incident. The other victim was identified as 24-year-old Jaquamold White of Gary.
One of the men was discovered inside a vehicle, while the other was found in a grassy area of nearby Froebel Park. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene, and their deaths were subsequently ruled as homicides by the Lake County Coroner's office.
The investigation into the double homicide was taken over by the Lake County Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force. As part of their initial investigation, two vehicles were towed from the scene. Authorities have appealed to the public for any information regarding the shooting.
As of now, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with the deaths of Ja’Markis Hackett and Jaquamold White. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths remains ongoing.
