In the early hours of a Thursday morning in Gary, Indiana, the lives of two young men were tragically cut short. On June 26, 2014, 17-year-old Daven James and 23-year-old Darrien Eftes were found shot to death outside an apartment building in the 1600 block of West 5th Avenue. Police responded to a call of shots fired around 1:30 a.m. and discovered the two men unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Daven, known to his loved ones as 'Debo,' was a member of the True Light Fellowship Church and an employee at a local Wendy's restaurant. He was survived by his parents, Rickey and Latasha James, as well as several sisters and a large extended family who cherished him. His family remembered him as a loving individual with a protective nature, who had a talent for making people laugh.
In the immediate aftermath of the double homicide, the Gary Police Department secured the area to search for evidence both inside and outside the apartment building. However, no arrests were made in the initial stages of the investigation.
Despite the passage of time, there have been no publicly reported arrests or naming of suspects in the murders of Daven James and Darrien Eftes. The case remains a painful and unresolved chapter for their families and the community.
