In the early morning hours of January 14, 2022, Norman Bailey, a 60-year-old male business owner and community leader in Gary, Indiana, was fatally shot inside his own establishment, the Blue Room Lounge. The incident, which also left a second individual wounded, cut short the life of a man described as a pillar of his community. Bailey was not only a dedicated entrepreneur, having established Bailey's Inc.
in 2001 and serving as the CEO of the Blue Room Lounge and Bailey Real Estate Holdings, but he was also a committed public servant. He was serving his second term as a member of the Gary Community School Corporation's Advisory Panel at the time of his death.
The events of that tragic morning unfolded shortly before the 3 a.m. closing time of the lounge. A man, later identified as 42-year-old Dariel E. Dodd, entered the bar. Accounts from witnesses vary on the nature of the interaction between Dodd and Bailey. One witness reported that the two men appeared to be having a regular conversation before another individual, Tyrel Bailey, who was helping to clear the lounge, asked Dodd to leave. According to this account, Dodd seemed upset but turned to leave before pulling out a black gun and opening fire on Norman Bailey. Tyrel Bailey then attempted to intervene and was also shot multiple times, sustaining injuries to his legs and buttocks.
Another witness provided a more contentious version of events, stating they overheard an argument between Dodd and Bailey. This witness claimed that Dodd confronted Bailey, saying, 'your son killed my brother,' to which Bailey responded that it had nothing to do with him. An attempt by the witness to step between the two men was reportedly dismissed by Bailey before the shooting began.
Less than a week after the shooting, on January 19, the Gary Police Department announced that homicide charges had been filed against Dariel E. Dodd. Dodd was already in custody in a Tippecanoe County Jail on unrelated charges at the time. His arrest came a day after the murder, following a property damage crash on Interstate 65. An Indiana State Trooper who stopped Dodd for numerous traffic violations noticed signs of intoxication and suspected further criminal activity. During the investigation, Dodd attempted to dispose of a handgun by throwing it into a ditch. In connection with Norman Bailey's death, Dodd was charged with murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, and aggravated battery, with an enhancement for the use of a firearm in the commission of a crime. He awaited extradition to Lake County to face these charges.
