In the early morning hours of Friday, March 31, 2023, the life of 17-year-old Val King Jr. was tragically cut short in Gary, Indiana. The young man was discovered in an alley near West 5th Avenue and Garfield Street, suffering from a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was rushed to Northlake Methodist Hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries.
According to initial reports, the teenager had mentioned heading to a gas station shortly before shots rang out in the alley.
It was the sound of that gunfire that prompted a check of the area, leading to the heartbreaking discovery of the wounded teen. The Lake County Coroner's Office later officially ruled his death a homicide.
Authorities have asked that anyone with information regarding the shooting come forward and contact the Gary Police Department.
