In the summer of 2023, the life of a one-year-old boy from South Bend, Indiana, was tragically cut short. Kylin W. Brooks, a male born on July 17, 2022, died on August 9, 2023, from a gunshot wound. On the afternoon of Tuesday, August 8, 2023, Kylin was at a residence on Amhurst Avenue with his uncle, 19-year-old Joseph Troupe, and two other small children.
Troupe had been sleeping on the floor with a loaded handgun under his pillow. After leaving the room without securing the weapon, one of Kylin's two-year-old cousins found the gun. The toddler accidentally discharged the firearm, striking Kylin. First responders found the gravely injured child around 1 p.m. and rushed him to the hospital.
