In the autumn of 2023, the life of 25-year-old Travis S. Clemons, a male resident of Michigan City, Indiana, was tragically cut short. On the evening of Thursday, October 19th, deputies from the La Porte County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a residence in the 8600 west block of County Road 400 North following a report of a battery. Initial information suggested that someone might have been struck by a vehicle.

Upon their arrival at the scene, officers discovered Travis S. Clemons lying motionless near a vehicle. As first responders began to render aid, they made a critical discovery; Clemons had sustained a gunshot wound to his torso. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Travis S. Clemons succumbed to his injuries in the early morning hours of Friday, October 20, 2023.

Present at the scene when authorities arrived was 22-year-old Dawson W. Mahoney of Coolspring Township. Mahoney was detained by deputies and subsequently taken to the La Porte County Sheriff's Office for questioning. Following an investigation by detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division that continued through the night and into the next day, probable cause was established for Mahoney's arrest in connection with Clemons' death.

Dawson W. Mahoney was formally charged with murder and was held in the La Porte County Jail on a $1,000,000 cash-only bond. In a later development in December 2025, ahead of his scheduled jury trial, Mahoney reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of Voluntary Manslaughter in La Porte County Court for the death of Travis Clemons. His sentencing was scheduled for January of the following year.
