A fifteen-year-old male, Devin Gilbert III, was fatally shot in Indianapolis on the afternoon of November 3, 2023. A student at KIPP Indy Legacy High School, Devin was walking home from school shortly before 1 p.m. when the incident occurred in the school's parking lot located in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the school reported that he was rushed to a hospital for medical attention but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities believe the shooting was a targeted act.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department homicide detectives quickly identified a suspect, and on the same evening as the shooting, a 15-year-old male was arrested for his alleged involvement. The suspect was not a student at KIPP Indy Legacy High School. Investigators noted that there had been a disturbance at the school earlier in the day and were working to determine if it was connected to the fatal shooting. Following the arrest, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office charged the teenage suspect with murder and attempted murder. The prosecutor's office also filed a waiver motion to have the suspect's case transferred from the juvenile court to be tried in the adult court system.
In the days that followed, Devin's mother received threats of a shooting at her son's funeral. While conducting surveillance, undercover officers observed several men with guns getting into an SUV near the funeral location. A traffic stop was initiated, and police arrested four men after finding multiple illegal firearms in their vehicle, including a handgun with a machine gun conversion device and a rifle loaded with 40 live rounds. One of the men reportedly told police they had the guns for protection due to the threats made against Gilbert's mother.
