Bryant, the homeowner, had called 911 on himself after the shooting, which took place outside his garage. According to court documents, Bryant claimed he feared he was about to be robbed and fired what he intended to be a warning shot to scare Wombles away. Wombles was reportedly unarmed at the time of the shooting, with only a screwdriver found in his pocket. Initially detained and then released, Bryant was later charged with reckless homicide by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office on May 13, 2024. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he turned himself in on May 21. Legal analysis provided in news reports suggests that a reckless homicide charge carries a lower burden of proof than a murder charge, which would require proving intent. The Wombles family has expressed disappointment that Bryant is not facing a murder charge, feeling that the justice system has failed them. Bryant was booked into the Marion County Jail and was later released after posting a $15,000 surety bond.
Alfred, known to friends and family as 'Wayne,' was described as a loving person with a heart of gold who was always willing to help others. His obituary remembers him as a comedian who loved to make people laugh and who deeply cherished his family. He was a proud father to his three children, Juleah, America, and Alfred, and was their biggest fan in all they did.
