Leticia Zaragoza, a 45-year-old woman, was found shot to death inside an apartment in Chicago's South Loop on January 9, 2023. Police discovered her around 3 p.m. in the 2000 block of South Indiana Avenue after a window of time in which the shooting is believed to have occurred between Sunday afternoon and Monday afternoon. She had multiple gunshot wounds to the head. Nearby, 36-year-old Joseph P. Fry was also found dead with a gunshot wound to the head.
Within two days, the Cook County medical examiner ruled the case a murder-suicide: Zaragoza's death was a homicide, and Fry died by suicide. The ruling reframed what initially appeared to be a double homicide into a domestic murder-suicide inside their home near Wintrust Arena, in the heart of the neighborhood's condo towers and busy thoroughfares.
Authorities did not announce any arrests, and reporting indicated police were not seeking additional suspects after the medical examiner's determination. In the days that followed, relatives remembered Zaragoza as gentle and widely loved; her brother told reporters outside the building that “she never bothered anybody… She was loved by everybody.”
