On June 16, 2024, Elgin police responded to a report of a shooting in the 600 block of Villa Street around 11:30 p.m..
Upon arrival, officers found a man, later identified as 24-year-old Kevin Ambriz, a resident of Elgin (though some sources incorrectly state he was from Algonquin), suffering from gunshot wounds. Ambriz was transported to a local hospital and later transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he died on June 18, 2024, due to multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation by the Elgin Police Department's Major Investigations Division revealed that an altercation had occurred between Ambriz and a 16-year-old boy. During the altercation, Ambriz displayed a knife, and the teenager subsequently discharged a firearm, striking Ambriz.
The 16-year-old boy was taken into custody on June 18, 2024, without incident. The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and determined the shooting to be in self-defense. However, the boy was charged with one count of unlawful possession of a firearm, a Class 3 felony, and three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, a Class 4 felony.
Following his arrest, the juvenile was transported to the Kane County Youth Home. There has been no indication of additional charges being pursued in the case.
Kevin Ambriz's death was officially ruled as a result of the shooting, and his autopsy was scheduled to be conducted after his death. Funeral services for Ambriz were planned, including a visitation at Dundee Funeral Home in East Dundee and burial at the Algonquin Cemetery.
