On June 16, 2024, Elgin police responded to a report of a shooting in the 600 block of Villa Street around 11:30 p.m..

Upon arrival, officers found a man, later identified as 24-year-old Kevin Ambriz, a resident of Elgin (though some sources incorrectly state he was from Algonquin), suffering from gunshot wounds.
