The incident occurred when Luther "Luke" Casteel, a 42-year-old male, returned to the bar after being ejected for harassing female patrons. Enraged and heavily armed, Casteel opened fire inside the crowded establishment, resulting in the deaths of Richard Bartlett and 38-year-old bartender Jeffrey Weides, along with injuries to 21 others.
Casteel, described as a divorced construction worker with a history of violent behavior and a fascination with military paraphernalia, was quickly subdued by bar patrons and employees. He was charged with multiple counts, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and various weapons charges. The investigation revealed that Casteel had a criminal record, including a 1977 armed robbery conviction for which he served 13 years in prison.
