Joshua Bey, a 24-year-old African American man from Elgin, Illinois, tragically lost his life on August 6, 2019. The incident occurred in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Fleetwood Drive in Elgin. On that fateful morning, Joshua Bey and a friend met with two brothers, Xavier L. Butler, 28, and Isaiah Y. Butler, 26, to discuss an argument involving two women they knew. The situation quickly escalated when Joshua Bey pulled out a gun as Xavier approached him. Although Bey held the gun at his side, tensions rose, leading to a physical altercation. During the struggle, Xavier Butler, who was also armed, shot Joshua Bey and subsequently took his gun. In the chaos, Xavier accidentally shot his brother Isaiah in the thumb. As Joshua Bey lay on the ground dying, the Butler brothers kicked him before fleeing to Milwaukee.
The investigation into Joshua Bey's death led to the arrest of Xavier and Isaiah Butler. Both brothers were charged and later pleaded guilty to their respective roles in the fatal shooting. Xavier Butler was sentenced to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for armed violence, a Class X felony.
