Raymond Dyson's death was the result of a violent incident that occurred in a parking lot in the first block of Longwood Place in Elgin. On the day of his death, Raymond Dyson and his friend Mark McDaniel, 26, met with Travaris Stevenson, 26, and his accomplice Lee Spain, 32, to purchase a pound of marijuana. Stevenson and Spain traveled from Chicago to Elgin for the drug deal. During the transaction, Stevenson shot Raymond Dyson in the back of the head and Mark McDaniel twice in the back. Stevenson and Spain then fled the scene on foot, but were apprehended by police about a half-mile away approximately 20 minutes later.

In November 2021, Stevenson was found guilty on all charges and was sentenced to 95 years in prison. Spain was also charged with first-degree murder and other related offenses.
