Dayquan Wiley, a 17-year-old from Springfield, Illinois, was fatally shot on August 4, 2024. The incident occurred in a home located in the 1800 block of South 11th Street, where Wiley was found in a bedroom suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was subsequently transported to HSHS St. John's Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 3:33 p.m. by emergency room staff.
The death of Dayquan Wiley is under investigation by the Springfield Police Department and the Sangamon County Coroner. An autopsy was conducted, and preliminary findings confirmed that Wiley died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Two teenagers have been charged in connection with Wiley's murder. Larryoun Taylor, a 17-year-old, is being charged as an adult with First Degree Murder and Home Invasion. Taylor was indicted by a Sangamon County grand jury and appeared in court for his arraignment. He remains in custody, with his next court appearance scheduled for November 12, 2024.
A 15-year-old juvenile is also facing charges for Wiley's murder. This juvenile was apprehended in Wisconsin by the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force and is currently being extradited back to Sangamon County. The juvenile has been initially charged with First Degree Murder and Home Invasion in juvenile court. However, a petition will be filed to transfer the case to adult court, pending a court hearing to determine the appropriateness of such a transfer under Illinois law.
State’s Attorney John Milhiser has stated that the community's prayers are with the family of Dayquan Wiley and emphasized that those who commit violent acts will be found and brought to justice.
